Atopic Dermatitis (AD) is a multifactorial disease affecting millions of people and dogs worldwide. Recent studies showed that in addition to skin barrier and immune cell dysfunction, the gut microbiota is a major player in allergy development. The microbiota is determined by the genetic background and several environmental factors. It influences development of allergy through various mechanisms such as bacterial derived metabolic factors including chort chain fatty acids, the promotion of tolerogenic T-cell populations and epigenetic mechanisms. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) represents a novel, simple, low-cost tool for treatment or even prevention of different chronic inflammatory diseases, including allergies.
